La Residence d’Angkor: An idyllic hideaway in Siem Reap

LA Residence d’Angkor is a 5-star hotel run by the Orient-Express Group, with a boutique, hideaway feel. It is situated on the opposite side of the river to Siem Reap’s central market and alleyways crammed with bars, cafes, restaurants and boutiques. The hotel is far from cookie-cutter – it reflects its Cambodian setting through the use of local materials and architectural styles. A drawcard is the huge, green tiled swimming pool designed in homage to the town’s Baray lakes, originating from the 11th century.

What makes it special?

The architecture and stunning tropical grounds make La Residence d’Angkor a 5-star stay evoking Cambodia’s rich heritage. The unique pool is made using handmade tiles reflecting various shades of green, designed to reflect the region’s Baray pools, an ancient irrigation system. Lush, local foliage abounds, and the hotel’s buildings are designed to reflect traditional Khmer wooden buildings. Local materials like bamboo, silk and cotton are used in the guestrooms. The hotel has a private, tranquil feel, though is conveniently located just over Siem Reap’s river from the centre of town and its wonderful array of dining and shopping options.

What to expect?

The rooms are spacious, and the bathrooms feature large tubs. Each room comes with its own private terrace overlooking either the river, gardens or the pool. The swimming pool is in the centre of the hotel’s grounds and blends in beautifully with the tropical garden. The hotel has more of a boutique feel than a large hotel vibe. A highlight is the large, open sided tapas restaurant and bar, The Martini Lounge, with its wooden beamed ceiling and tropical outlook.

Spacious rooms are decked out with local materials like bamboo, silk and cotton.

What is there to do?

La Residence d’Angkor features four onsite restaurants and bars, from the upscale restaurant The Dining Room featuring royal Khmer cuisine and traditional music and dance performances, to a poolside bar and outdoor BBQ restaurant.
