Hotel Bougainvillea: Serenity and affordability in Goa
ALSO known as Granpa’s Inn, Hotel Bougainvillea is a rambling, heritage-style building that is family owned and run. Whether eating at the lovely restaurant on the verandah, relaxing in the dense green garden or luxuriating in the pool, it all feels worlds away from the high-paced beachfront of world-famous Anjuna just 10 minutes drive away. Hotel Bougainvillea really gives you the best of both worlds – blissful relaxation and the heady delights of Goa.
The blend of Goan and Portuguese heritage in the structure and makeup of the building has also made it a long-time favourite for visitors, with many repeat guests year after year.
What makes it special?
Hotel Bougainvillea is very laid-back and nothing is too much trouble for the staff; you can eat on the verandah, by the pool or on a private section of terrace. It’s also a wonderful place to relax, in comfort and style, and have a real holiday. The owners also live on site and are very accommodating, indeed Lucindo is always happy to regale visitors with tales about the family history.
What to expect?
Simply put, Hotel Bougainvillea is charming. Everything here is homely. The rooms are on ground level and each runs off the veranda giving the place a kind of house party feel. With its old heritage terracotta tiles and stained-glass windows there is much that reeks of its 200 year old history, but it’s also very modern too with air conditioning, television and en-suite facilities. It’s the perfect place to come back to after a day out or to call home during your Goan sojourn.
What is there to do?
Hotel Bouginvillea shares a garden with the Brahmani Yoga Centre and guests are welcome to attend classes there. Alternatively lounge by the pool or indulge in a game of billiards. For those that want to venture out beyond the grounds staff can help you get a bicycle to pedal into Anjuna to see the weekly markets or explore the beaches.
What’s the damage?
Despite the Anjuna address, Hotel Bougainvillea doesn’t have the Goa price tag of other locations, and come in off season between June and September and the rooms are almost giveaways. High season runs over Christmas and New Year. But one good thing about the hotel is that they include both taxes and breakfast in the costs, so there are no additional charges when it’s time to pay your bill.
The standard a/c room is for those on a budget at US $15-70 a night depending what season you visit. There’s a medium option for US $23-94 per night and if money is really no real option then you absolutely have to go for the pool side suite for US $27-98 per night. These have larger rooms and even has a private outdoor shower.
