DESPITE the number of theme parks that have sprung in mainland China this year, a new index by TripAdvisor showed little sign of it.
The list of Asia’s best amusement parks – topped by Singapore’s beloved Universal Studios – is jarring in its exclusion of China with only Hangzhou Songcheng Park in the 18th spot.
Chimelong Ocean Kingdom and Songcheng Lijiang Romance Park are consistently drawing in large crowds, but the new rankings don’t reflect the numbers.
Plus, this year alone, China has seen the momentous launch of Shanghai Disneyland and Wanda City in Nanchang helmed by China’s richest man, Wang Jianlin.
In the pipeline is also a US$3.3 billion Universal Studios park in Beijing to start operating in 2019 as well as a Six Flags Park in Tianjin in 2018.
However, Hong Kong did well for itself this year with Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park snagging second and third places respectively.
Japan was also a crowd favorite with Tokyo DisneySea, Universal Studios Japan and Tokyo Disneyland scaling fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively.
India performed surprisingly well with Wonderla Amusement Park in Bangalore, Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad and Imagica in Mumbai rounding up the top ten.
Singapore’s Universal Studios took the top spot for the third year in a row and is currently rated as the top TripAdvisor destination in Sentosa Island. Themed rides like Transformers and Battlestar Galactica have garnered rave reviews online.
Here’s the top ten list:
- Universal Studios Singapore
- Hong Kong Disneyland
- Ocean Park, Hong Kong
- Tokyo DisneySea
- Universal Studios Japan
- Tokyo Disneyland
- Vinpearl Amusement Park, Vietnam
- Wonderla Amusement Park, India
- Ramoji Film City, India
- Imagica, India
Meanwhile, on a global scale, the US dominated the top ten with all entries located in Orlando, Florida and California. Universal’s Islands of Adventure in Orlando was crowned the “world’s most amazing”.
The list was curated using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of ratings and reviews gathered over a 12-month period.
