VIETNAM’S coastal city of Da Nang will house a large-scale luxury commercial project complete with accommodation, dining, and entertainment – Cocobay.
Some hotels and establishments are already launched but the 57 ha project will be fully complete by 2020, and will feature a whopping 10,000 rooms by then.
Da Nang’s natural beach setting and its proximity to the heritage town of Hoi An – especially popular among Chinese and Korean tourists – make it an ideal setting for a project like Cocobay.
“We have the most beautiful beach in the world,” Nguyen Thi My Hoang, sales manager at Cocobay Hotels & Naman Retreats Danang told Travel Wire Asia at the recent ITE HCMC event. “And it’s only 15km from Hoi An, so tourists can get a mix of beach and heritage.”
Three boutique hotels are under construction at the moment – Bisou, Latido, and Muze, each with its own brand of style. Also in the pipeline are a cinema, a cabaret theater, and a shopping mall.
At the moment, the complex hosts apartments and condo-hotels that will have direct access to the beach via an underground tunnel. Popular football star Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly extended his property portfolio by snapping up a unit there.
To capitalize on its Chinese, Korean, and Japanese market, the city is pushing to introduce more direct flights to cities in these countries. In August, Jetstar Pacific launched a direct route between Osaka and Da Nang.
Da Nang is also an upcoming area earmarked for MICE tourism. “Because it’s in the center of Vietnam, they do conventions and incentive groups,” Hoang said. It doesn’t hurt that the city is home to the biggest golf course in Vietnam.
However, Xuan Binh, deputy director of the Da Nang Department of Tourism, said that the city’s major weaknesses included the lack of a MICE development strategy, collaboration for local tourism development, direct flights from Europe, North America and Australia, human resources, technical facilities, and support services such as night entertainment, shows, and souvenirs.
