WHILE tourists may flock to Thailand for its world-famous beaches, unique cuisine and retail opportunities, many will be unaware of the stunning flower festivals that start to bloom around this time of year.
The “Land of Smiles” is home to a number of strikingly beautiful floral showings that are good enough to rival their more famous European and Japanese counterparts. Starting in November, the season tends to run through to February, so now is the perfect time to soak up the rainbow of colors at these top festivals.
1. Chiang Mai Flower Festival – Feb 2 – 4, 2018
Living up to the name ‘Rose of the North,’ Chiang Mai puts on an annual flower festival to showcase the abundance of beautiful flowers and decorative plants which are in full bloom towards the end of the winter season. Suan Buak Hat Park is transformed into an open-air exhibition center that includes floral tapestries that blanket the land, agricultural exhibitions, and floral contests and sales.
The festival also features flower-decorated floats that parade around the city showing the vibrant- colored flowers as well as dancers in traditional costumes.
2. Lopburi Sunflower Blooming Festival – November 2017 – January 2018
Every November until January, the fields of Lopburi transform into a magnificent sea of yellow, thanks to the radiant sunflowers which are in full bloom during that period. Lopburi is home to the biggest sunflower fields in Thailand including the biggest one in the Phatthana Nikom District, and many visitors flock to Lopburi yearly for a glimpse of this captivating scene.
Visitors can explore the fields on foot or jump on a bicycle. Locally made products are available for purchase to support the local growers.
3. Flora Park Festival, Wang Nam Khiao – November 2017 – February 2018
The Flora Park Festival has become an annual affair to showcase the wide variety of beautiful flowers bred and grown in the Wang Nam Khiao area. Displaying an impressive 100,000 flowers of over 20 different species, the sea of color makes for a breathtaking sight.
