Clove Hall is a privately-owned Edwardian Anglo-Malay bungalow set in an oasis of tropical gardens. It is just ten minutes by trishaw from the vibrant world heritage site of Penang, Georgetown. It was opened to guests in 2009 by the award winning hotelier Christopher Ong. The house now has new owners Jo and Jim Lim. The sensitive conservation and restoration of this once dilapidated bungalow has captured the spirit of this mercantile city and its fusion of Chinese, Malay, Indian and English heritage.
Clove Hall's fertile grounds, carved out of the original Sarkie Brothers coconut plantation, have been transformed into a sultry tropical garden, verdant with spice trees and flowering plants. It is the perfect showcase for a collection of local antiques, artwork and furnishings that combine the best of the past with modern conveniences.
With only six elegant and luxurious suites Clove hall offers privacy, personalised service and modern comforts. This tropical oasis offers a beautiful and chilled hideout from which to discover Penang's amazing food, the heritage and cultural diversity, and explore the islands, hills, forests and beaches.
A property such as this complements the UNESCO listed heritage site of Georgetown. It is easy to go around the city as well as the island on a rented motorcycle, alternatively trishaws and taxis are also available. The bungalow has been decorated with local antiques and art work. A range of personal as well as tour related services can be organized by the staff of Clove Hall. There really is no better way of beginning you stay in this heritage city, than by staying at the heritage Clove Hall Hotel.
Clove Hall’s suites feature different interiors, and most have wooden flooring and antique furniture. Each suite has a flat-screen TV, a day bed, and a private bathroom with a rain shower. Suites have either a balcony, patio or courtyard.
"From the moment you arrive you are made to feel very welcome. Jo and Jim are excellent hosts and do all they can to make you stay enjoyable. The staff are all very friendly and attentive. You could almost feel as if you were an Edwardian Colonial visitor." 50_Somethings, Bedfordshire, uk
"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Clove Hall and would recommend it.
Standing out are the: large suites in colonial yet modern decor, a fine (or best) example of a restored colonial home in Penang; swimming pool which we loved having given the heat; extreme friendliness of the owners and staff; small size of just 6 suites; tranquil residential neighbourhood just on the edge of Georgetown (about 10-15 min walk to Cheong fatt tze mansion, another 10 min walk to the core heritage area - wish it were a tiny bit closer but no trouble walking really). Definitely an oasis in Georgetown with true old world charm." AFHamm, Beijing
"This is the sort of hotel that the sophisticated traveller who appreciates good service, taste, design, art, heritage, and quiet surrounds will delight in. service was warm and unfussy (erlynn rayos deserves a special mention here), the cinnamon suite was beautifully appointed. my penang trip really began with my checking into clove hall, after a disastrous night at batu ferringhi. I can't wait to go back." Solo Traveller, Singapore
