A luxury resort sprawled over 300 acres that offers a chance to explore its surrounding coffee and spice plantation. From its beginings, this beautifully themed working plantation resort has married the finest guest facilities with outstanding service standards to offer its guests an idyllic escape into a bygone, more relaxed era of gentleman planters.
Depending on room selection and seasonal variations, expect a room to cost between USD $380 and USD $730 per night depending on room selection and season.
There are three different restaurants here:
Plantain Leaf - A pure vegetarian restaurant that serves both north and south Indian fare;
The Peppercorn – Barbecue and grilled tikkas and kebabs are this restaurant’s specialties;
Granary: The quintessential multi-cuisine restaurant, it serves an array of mouth-watering delicacies from Continental to Indian. The signature Pandi Curry (spiced curried pork) with aromatic Kodava flavour is a known favourite.
Aside from a range of restaurants, a bar called Hunter’s Lounge serves unique cocktails and mocktails.
With the aim to share the culture of the Kodava community that occupies this region, the cottages at the resort are inspired by Kodava architecture. Made with teakwood, the rooms are airy and spacious, and come with lavish interiors replete with four-poster beds, minimalistic décor, wooded furniture, elegant furnishings and cosy fireplaces.
The most opulent cottages are the Private Pool Villas that come with a living room, courtyard, personal swimming pool, and two sit-outs with planters' chairs to unwind while reading a book and relishing filter coffee.
All the rooms come furnished with the usual suspects like tea/coffee maker, air conditioner, electronic safe, hair dryer, TV, internet access and mini bar.
The resort offers a wide range on on-site activities such as nature walks, bird watching, coracle (a circular fishing boat made of woven reeds) rides, and a tour of the plantations.
The off-site activities include excursions to nearby sites like a visit to the Bylekuppe (a Tibetan settlement and monastery), Dubare Elephant Camp and Madikeri, a misty hill town that houses the relics of the Kodava Kings at the Mercara Fort and Raja's seat.
Do cross check the availability of certain activities before you visit, as they are subject to seasonal changes.
Enveloped in lust greenery, the Orange County resort is situated at a height of 800m in the verdant hills of Coorg; a flourishing hill station in Karnataka. The resort is set amid aromatic coffee and spice plantations that span 300 acres, with River Cauvery at its border and Dubare Reserve Forest in the vicinity.
It is a popular destination during the monsoon season; a time when the surrounding landscapes are covered in thick mist and flowers blossom all around. The resort lays heavy emphasis on responsible tourism, and therefore has employed certain methods to enable them to do so; such as recycling all plastic, paper and metal objects, using CLF lamps for energy conservation, and ensuring all kitchen waste is processed at a bio-gas plant.
If staying at a coffee plantation wasn’t a draw enough for coffee lovers, their coffee lounge is sure to attract them. Balancing itself on stilts, the coffee lounge overlooks paddy fields and sits adjacent to a well-stocked library.
Since the resort sees more family and groups visits, it has a dynamic children’s activity center that is equipped with facilities for table tennis, painting, films, books and board games.
The kids can also waddle around in the communal swimming pool, while the adults can head to the infinity pool. There is an Ayurvedic spa with traditional treatments and holistic therapies for those who looking for recuperate from their hectic lives.
"Excellent resort; one of the best I’ve been to. From the staff to the service, the quality, ambiance and food were all good. A place one should surely visit." Ram, Karur.
"We were travelling with our 7 and 3-year-olds, and my father who is 80; and they managed to exceed on all levels. The food was excellent and varied, the location was stunning, the kids’ activities were really educational and interesting, the accommodation was very comfortable, the cultural entertainment was great, as were the tours; but most of all, the team working and running the show were top-rated. They were attentive, helpful and friendly." Arun, London.
"I have never experienced such friendly staff. In the three days of my stay, I felt completely energized. I have a few suggestions for improvement though. The tour guides and in-house masseurs are not very well-trained. It would be great if they gained more knowledge about their jobs, as required by luxury resort standards." Manohar, Mumbai.
