IN July-August 2010 Jo Lane travelled 1700km from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi on a $300 scooter. This is her story…

THE beautiful coastal town of Mui Ne is located about 200km from Ho Chi Minh City in southern Vietnam. So I’m not sure why I drove about 270km – probably because I took the back roads – see my previous post.

Mui Ne is a major fishing area and the locals use a 2m wide circular basket boat, known as Thung Chai, paddled with one oar to get from shore to their larger wooden boats, between boats and also to fish from. These are made of woven bamboo strips and can carry four or five people although I only ever saw one person in them.

Other highlights of a trip to Mui Ne include its enormous sand dunes, the Fairy Spring that flows through dunes creating interesting formations in the sand and rock, and a Cham tower south of the beach.
