Fort Tiracol Heritage Hotel: Step back in time in Goa, India

STAY at Fort Tiracol and you will be treated to some of the best views in Goa. Thanks to its elevated position over the stunning Arabian Sea and the beautiful Tiracol River estuary, there are breathtaking sights to be seen from every part of the fort.

Fort Tiricol Heritage Hotel

Thanks to the efforts of the same couple that run the Nilaya Hermitage, Fort Tiracol is now one of the most sought after hotel destinations in Goa. The rooms are large with bright yellow walls and wrought-iron furniture and have a homely comfortable feel, despite the traditional austerity of the fort. Each room has a private balcony and there’s a spacious upper terrace where meals are served. Here they really make the most of the high and lofty surroundings and it’s truly a meal with a view as you indulge in a menu that incorporates local Goan dishes and seafood.

What makes it special?

There’s a palpable sense of history at Fort Tiracol evident particularly in the original 18th century balustrades on the upper terraces and the whitewashed 17th century chapel on site. There are only seven rooms—named after the days of the week—which makes it feel exclusive and isolated, at least at night when the day trippers have gone (see below).

What to expect?

Fort Tiracol is listed as a national monument and therefore open to visitors until 6pm each day. The quietest times are therefore early morning and late in the evening. These day visitors may also dine in the hotel restaurant during the day so go early at mealtime to secure a table. On Sundays and Wednesdays local people come to use the chapel for mass so there can be additional numbers on these days, although many guests make the most of the opportunity to go inside the chapel at these times.

What is there to do?

While Fort Tiracol does not have its own private beach it does have terraces for sun tanning or you can walk down to the ferry where it’s a quick ride over to Querim beach. There are shacks along the beach where you can get a quick bite to eat or a drink.

If you do wish to journey further afield you will need to arrange a taxi. Alternatively the hotel can organise for boat trips to go fishing, spot dolphins or simply picnic on a nearby beach.

What’s the damage?

At Fort Tiracol the luxuries don’t come cheap. Standard rooms cost US$175 and suites are US$225. While these prices are for two people and include breakfast and dinner there is also an 18 percent tax applicable. And from December 20 to January 10 the room rates are higher.
