Last May, AirAsia X launched its direct flight from Bali’s Denpasar Airport to Tokyo, a route that saw immediate success. In 2016, the number of Indonesians visiting Japan reached 270,000, a 32 percent increase from the previous year.

In 2017, it increased by 30 percent.

Indonesian news portal Tempo cited Japan’s Ambassador to Indonesia Masafumi Ishii as saying that towards the end of 2017, the number of Indonesian tourists visiting Japan was more than 300,000. Tempo also went on to list a bunch of reasons why Indonesians like traveling to Japan: four seasons, safety, transportation system, and technology.

In speaking about the Jakarta to Tokyo route launch, AirAsia X Indonesia CEO captain AirAsia X Indonesia CEO captain Sulistyo Nugroho Hanung said:

“We open this route to welcome more Japanese tourists to explore Indonesia’s beauty. The number of Indonesian tourists to Japan has also increased by up to 30 percent from last year, hence hopefully they could use this opportunity to fulfill their vacation dream to Japan more affordably.”
