Who owns these luxury yachts? You’d be surprised
IN FEBRUARY 2018, a controversial Jho Low-owned luxury yacht was seized by the Indonesian government as part of a multi-billion dollar corruption investigation.
Also known as the Malaysian state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
The superyacht, also known as The Equanimity, was in Benoa Bay near the Indonesian island of Bali.
According to The Edge Singapore, it was built by Oceano and valued at over US$260 million. In 2015, The Equanimity won the prize for “Best in Show” at the Monaco Yacht Show.
“Among the superyacht’s amenities are a helicopter landing pad, an on-board gymnasium, a cinema, a massage room, an experiential shower and a plunge pool,” The Edge Singapore wrote.
The 300-foot yacht is among several assets believed to have been purchased through stolen funds from 1MDB.
That having said, not all yachts owned by famous people were obtained through illegal means.
Ever wondered who owned the most impressive superyachts or megayachts in the world?
Here are some of the most impressive ones:
Steve Jobs: Venus
Designed by Philippe Starck’s design company Ubik and built by Feadship for the late co-founder of Apple Inc. Steve Jobs, superyacht Venus costs more than US$117 million.
Feadship is known worldwide as a specialist in building one-of-a-kind superyachts.
Named after the Roman goddess of love, the all-aluminum yacht was unveiled on Oct 28, 2012, a year after Jobs’ passing, at the Feadship shipyard in Aalsmeer in the Netherlands.
According to SuperYachtFan, the 225-feet yacht can accommodate 12 guests and has a crew of 22.
Not much is known about the interior as there are no interior photos available, but Venus is said to have a minimalist interior.
The yacht is now under the care of Jobs’ family.
J.K. Rowling: Amphitrite
J.K. Rowling, the staggeringly wealthy author of the Harry Potter novels, bought the breathtaking 156-feet yacht Amphitrite in 2016.
Designed by Taka Yachts and built by Turquoise Yacht in Turkey, the luxury vessel was previously owned by Johnny Depp.
At the cost of US$27 million, Amphitrite has all the trimming to make it superyacht including a classically styled and plushly furnished interior.
The yacht boasts a state-of-the-art entertainment system with satellite television, a covered aft deck that seats 10 people, four guest staterooms, a master stateroom, and a well-stocked galley.
It also has recreational equipment such as kayaks, snorkeling gear, windsurfing and wakeboards, and two tenders for water skiing and jaunts ashore.
Last year, it was reported that Rowling put Amphitrite up for both charter and purchase.
Tiger Woods: Privacy
In 2004, high profile golfer Tiger Woods purchased a yacht from Christensen Shipyards for a whopping US$20 million.
Aptly named Privacy, as he is constantly stalked by paparazzi and fans, the yacht spans 115-feet long and can cruise at a speed of 12 knots.
The interior styling and decision-making were undertaken by his wife of that time, Elin Nordegren.
According to Power and Motor Yacht, Privacy has 6,500 square feet of living and work space, a master suite, and five guest rooms.
Other amenities include a gym and theater, a Jacuzzi, an elevator, a sky-lounge bar, a walk-in refrigerator, two built-in wall safes, and a deck dining area that seats 12.
Woods also owns another boat, a 61-footer named The Solitude, a dive boat.
Giorgio Armani: Main
Multi-millionaire Italian fashion guru Giorgio Armani can do more than just designing clothes, he even designed his own US$60 million yacht.
Delivered by Codecasa, Main is made of a steel and aluminum structure and can be spotted from a mile away due to its trademark dark green painted hull.
However, Armani told Boat International “painting Maìn green was a choice made to camouflage her”.
At 213-feet, the yacht boasts large interior spaces and can accommodate 14 guests in six cabins and has a crew of 14.
As expected, it has an Armani-designed saloon interior that sleek, minimal, and clean.
Main also boasts a cinema, spa pool, substantial sundeck, indoor gym and six large cabins for guests.
Steven Spielberg: Seven Seas
“Sweet dreams are made of this. Who am I to disagree? I travel the world and the seven seas. Everybody’s looking for something.”
Filmmaker Steven Spielberg’s bespoke Italian-designed boat is the epitome of superstardom luxury, costing a hefty US$184 million.
