Airbnb Experiences joins forces with Sri Lanka’s tourism board
AIRBNB already has over 300 home listings in Sri Lanka, but it’s upping its presence in the Land of Serendipity.
“We have (rolled out) Experiences in almost 800 cities globally but this is the first time in Asia we have partnered with a tourism authority (rather than) launch Experiences on our own,” Airbnb India spokesperson Simran Kodesia told TTG Asia.
While the partnership aims to boost tourism in Sri Lanka and give Airbnb more exposure in the region, the main benefits will be seen by those enjoying the experiences.
And there are plenty of them.
Among the current 40 experiences on offer are heritage trails in Galle, surfing in Mirissa, and culinary trails across Colombo.
All the experiences on offer provide travelers with an authentic experience of Sri Lanka, but there are a few which stand out from the crowd.
These are our top picks of Sri Lanka’s Airbnb Experiences.
Minneriya Park elephant safari
The three-hour safari is US$32 per person including refreshments and transportation.
The safari begins on a jeep tour around the park where lucky participants might spot a wild parade of elephants.
The tour will then journey down to the banks of the Minneriya Reservoir where a bask of crocodiles can usually be found sunbathing and stalking prey.
Explore the Sinharaja forest reserve
This nature experience exposes you to 10 hours of stunning rainforest and all the magnificent creatures that live in it.
For US$96 per person, your host will collect you from your accommodation early in the morning and drive to the Unesco World Heritage rainforest.
As you trek through the forest, guided by a trained naturalist, you can stop to shower in waterfalls and bathe in natural pools while admiring the remarkable flora and fauna.
Go surfing in Galle
If you feel like getting your sea legs on, let surf enthusiast Osham Diluk teach you how to surf.
For US$25 he’ll get you from a wobbly mess to at least looking like you know what you’re doing.
Forest yoga and treetop relaxation
Whether you’re a yoga extraordinaire or you think Balasana is a cocktail, everyone is welcome at this day-long experience.
For US$56 per person, you can indulge in nine hours of forest yoga and mindful meditation in a semi-treetop house.
The curious foodie – Colombo food tour
The US$91 tour will begin by giving you an insight into the British and Dutch tea heritage of Sri Lanka.
You’ll then sample a traditional Sri Lankan lunch in the bohemian part of Colombo City and delve into some Dutch snacks.
Cook with me local food
Are you ready for Sri Lankan food to be your new favorite cuisine?
Your Sri Lankan host Chandana will teach you how to cook traditional cuisine using skills she learned from her mother.
After cooking Sri Lankan rice and curry, you can all sit down together and tuck in.
This experience is US$37 per person.
Kandy temples and nature with a local
Discover the cultural and historical sites across Kandy on an eight-hour walking tour for US$25.
Your experienced host Rohana will guide you through Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, several Hindum and Buddhist temples, and then to the tea fields, all the while providing in-depth knowledge about each place.
Sri Lanka martial arts show
In a tour that lasts just under five hours, you can expect to see a sword show, a fireworks display, learn about traditional survival techniques, and even practice them under supervision.
A Sri Lankan dinner and transport are also included in the US$96 cost.
There are plenty of other experiences waiting to be enjoyed in Sri Lanka, with the hopes of more being added to the list every day.
