How to make the most of your hotel’s concierge service

BY definition, a concierge service is there to plan tours and make dinner reservations, but they can do a whole lot more than that.

A luxury concierge service is capable of turning your vacation into an unforgettable journey, introducing you to tastes, sights, and experiences you never even knew you needed.

Many luxury hotels run a policy of “anything, anytime.” Some hotels have such committed concierge services that they’ve made international headlines on occasions.

In 2015, Texas-based Hotel Indigo: San Antonio-Riverwalk framed a picture of Nicholas Cage in the film Con Air for a guest. More recently, a guest staying at a California-based hotel had a similar request, only this time it was Jeff Goldblum he wanted framed three times.a

But silly gags aside, extravagant hotels often have an equally extravagant concierge service to match, like St Regis New York’s Bentley concierge service. The complimentary service is available to all guests for drop-offs and pick-ups within a 10-block radius of the hotel.

On the other side of the US, Hotel Nikko San Francisco has a “Canine Operating Officer” whose principle job is handing out doggy kisses and cuddles to guests.

There’s even a plush resort in the Maldives which offers the world’s first Instagram Butler for guests wanting to capture those picture-perfect moments.

While not every hotel will come with these specific services, you can bet the concierge where you’re staying can get you a reservation at the best restaurant in town or find you a nanny to look after your darlings while you enjoy the spa, for example.

If you’re new to the wonders of concierge services, here are a few tips on how to use them:

Get in touch before you arrive

Speaking with the concierge team before you arrive can save you a lot of time and stress.

Instead of turning up and trying to sort out car hire, reservations, tickets for attractions, and other vacation essentials ask the concierge team to arrange it all for you.

Be specific

You don’t need to be shy in front of a concierge team as they’ve had all sorts of peculiar requests.

While the “ask anything” rule applies, be as specific as possible. For example, if you want to see a waterfall, let them know whether you want to swim or take pictures and if you’re prepared to hike to it, fussed about crowds, or seek a hidden gem.

Be patient

Concierge teams may seem like magicians, but they can’t control time. They will prioritize your request if it comes with time pressure, but they can’t guarantee the results.

That’s why it’s always best to get in touch ahead of your arrival.

Delve into their local knowledge

If you’re heading to a destination for the first time, speaking to the concierge team is a must. They have a local knowledge unmatched by any guidebook.

Even if you’ve already sketched out an itinerary, ask their opinion on where to go, what to see and where to eat.

A concierge service is relative to the accommodation

If you’re staying at the world’s most exclusive resort and want to eat Beluga caviar on thin slices of Alba White Truffle for breakfast every morning, the concierge team will go above and beyond to make this happen.

However, if you’re staying in a modest three-star hotel, the concierge team might have trouble knowing who to call to get their hands on the rare ingredients.
